Direct democracy, through the use of the citizen’s initiative system, has been denied in Lane and Lincoln counties. This travesty has legal and political implications statewide. The attempts to hinder The People’s right to the initiative system stem from citizen-led efforts to write and pass laws that would protect the environment and public health. In Lincoln County, a voter-approved spray ban initiative was nullified by the courts. In Lane County, a spray ban initiative has never even been allowed to appear on the ballot.
Join the ORCRN for two 30-minute presentations that will cover:
1. Lane and Lincoln counties’ current petitions to seek justice from the Oregon Supreme Court
2. What can be done to prevent the growing trend that seeks to block duly qualified citizen initiatives from the ballot
