CELDF and the New Hampshire Community Rights Network are partnering to bring the Community Rights Awareness Workshop to Barnstead, NH.
New Hampshire residents face industrial wind production, an unprecedented energy “corridor” of transmission wires and steel towers, corporate water withdrawals, and other harms. In this workshop, we take an in-depth look at how political and legal structures have been set up to protect the interests of an elite wealthy minority, at the expense of the majority of people and community self-government. We’ll look at how corporations have received more rights and protections than real people living in communities, and we’ll look at how communities have pushed back against these oppressive structures to reclaim democratic self-government in their communities, and at the state level with a proposed Community Rights Amendment.
Nearly a dozen New Hampshire communities have adopted Community Bills of Rights ordinances establishing the right to clean air and water, the right to local community self-government, and the rights of nature. The measures ban the harmful projects, such as corporate water withdrawals, as a violation of rights.
